This plugin generates static html files from your dynamic WordPress blog. After a html file is generated your webserver will serve that file instead of processing the comparatively heavier and more expensive WordPress PHP scripts.

The static html files will be served to the vast majority of your users, but because a user's details are displayed in the comment form after they leave a comment those requests are handled by PHP. Static files are served to:

1. Users who are not logged in.
2. Users who have not left a comment on your blog.
3. Or users who have not viewed a password protected post.

99% of your visitors will be served static html files. Those users who don't see the static files will still benefit because they will see regular WP-Cache cached files and your server won't be as busy as before. This plugin will help your server cope with a front page appearance on digg.com or other social networking site.

If for some reason "supercaching" doesn't work on your server then don't worry. Caching will still be performed, but every request will require loading the PHP engine. In normal circumstances this isn't bad at all. Visitors to your site will notice no slowdown or difference. Supercache really comes into it's own if your server is underpowered, or you're experiencing heavy traffic. Super Cached html files will be served more quickly than PHP generated cached files but in every day use, the difference isn't noticeable.

Background

Before I developed this plugin, our team and clients experienced the same frustration you do with comment spam on your WordPress blog. Every blog we manage had comment moderation enabled and various other anti-spam plugins installed, but we still had a ton of comments tagged as spam in the spam queue that we had to sort through. This wasted a lot of valuable time, and we all know, time is money. We needed a solution.

Comment spam stems from an older problem - automated spamming of email contact forms on web sites. I developed a successful fix for this a while ago, and later applied it to our WordPress blogs. It was so effective, that I decided to add a few modifications and turn it into a WordPress plugin to be freely distributed. Blogs we manage used to get an excessive number of spam comments show up on the spam queue each day - now the daily average is zero spam comments.

To further the development of this anti-spam plugin, I now study thousands and thousands of potential spam comments from many test blogs and contributors. I use a special diagnostic version of the plugin, which provides much more information on each of these spam comments than what is shown in WordPress. By analyzing patterns and behaviors consistent with spam, I can continually improve the plugin and ensure future accuracy.

How It Works

Most of the spam hitting your blog originates from bots. Few bots can process JavaScript (JS). Few bots can process cookies. Fewer still, can handle both. In a nutshell, this plugin uses a dynamic combo of JavaScript and cookies to weed out the humans from spambots, preventing 99%+ of automated spam from ever getting to your site. Almost 100% of web site visitors will have these turned on by default, so this type of solution works silently in the background, with no inconveniences. There may be a few users (less than 2%) that have JavaScript and/or cookies turned off by default, but they will be prompted to simply turn those back on to post their comment. Overall, the few might be inconvenienced because they have JS and cookies turned off will be far fewer than the 100% who would be annoyed by CAPTCHA's, challenge questions, and other validation methods.

Some would argue that using JS and cookies is too simplistic an approach. Traditionally, programmers prefer using some type of basic AI to fight bots by trying to figure out if a comment is spam. While that isn't a bad idea, when used alone this method falls short because no machine AI can ever accurately judge whether a comment is spam - many spam comments get through that could easily have been stopped, and there are many false positives where non-spam comments get flagged as spam. Others may argue that some spammers have programmed their bots to read JavaScript, etc. In reality, the percentage of bots with these capabilities is still extremely low - less than 1%. It's simply a numbers game. Statistics tell us that an effective solution would involve using a technology that few bots can handle, therefore eliminating their ability to spam your site. The important thing in fighting spam is that we create a solution that can reduce spam noticeably and improve the user experience, and a 99%+ reduction in spam would definitely make a difference for most bloggers and site visitors.

Even so, it's important to know that the particular JS and cookies solution used in the WP-SpamFree anti-spam plugin has evolved quite a bit, and is no longer simple at all. There are now two layers of protection, a JavaScript/Cookies Layer, and an Algorithmic Layer. Even if bot authors could engineer a way to break through the JavaScript/Cookies Layer, the Algorithmic Layer would still stop 95% of the spam that the JavaScript Layer blocks. (I'm working to make this 100% for fully redundant protection.) This JavaScript Layer utilizes randomly generated keys, and is algorithmically enhanced to ensure that spambots won't beat it. The powerful Algorithmic Layer is what eliminates trackback/pingback spam, and much human spam as well. And, it does all that without hindering legitimate comments and trackbacks. The bottom line, is that this plugin just plain works, and is a powerful weapon against spam.

If you've decided to move things around on your site, you might overlook a few redirects and end up with some broken URLs. This will help you catch those so you can take care of them.

If you have a Search box on your blog, Search Meter automatically records what people are searching for -- and whether they are finding what they are looking for. Search Meter's admin interface shows you what people have been searching for in the last couple of days, and in the last week or month. It also shows you which searches have been unsuccessful. If people search your blog and get no results, they'll probably go elsewhere. With Search Meter, you'll be able to find out what people are searching for, and give them what they want by creating new posts on those topics.

You can also show your readers what the most popular searches are. The Popular Searches widget displays a configurable list of recent popular successful search terms on your blog, with each term hyperlinked to the actual search results. There's also a Recent Searches widget, which simply displays the most recent searches. If you are happy to edit your theme, both of these functions are also available as template tags.

Search Meter installs easily and requires no configuration. Just install it, activate it, and it starts tracking your visitors' searches.

View Statistics

To see your search statistics, Log in to WordPress Admin, go to the Dashboard section and click Search Meter. You'll see the most popular searches in the last day, week and month. Click "Last 100 Searches" or "Last 500 Searches" to see lists of all recent searches.

Manage Statistics

There are a couple of management option available if you go to the Settings section and click Search Meter. Use the Reset Statistics button to clear all past search statistics; Search Meter will immediately start gathering fresh statistics. If you're technically-minded, you might want to check the "Keep detailed information" checkbox to make Search Meter save technical information about every search (the information is taken from the HTTP headers).

There are hundreds of plugins and services which can provide statistics about your visitors. However I found that even though something like Google Analytics provides an incredible depth of information, it can be overwhelming and doesn't really highlight what's most interesting to me as a writer. That's why Automattic created its own stats system, to focus on just the most popular metrics a blogger wants to track and provide them in a clear and concise interface.

Installing this stats plugin is much like installing Akismet, all you need is to put in your API Key and the rest is automatic.

Once it's running it'll begin collecting information about your pageviews, which posts and pages are the most popular, where your traffic is coming from, and what people click on when they leave. It'll also add a link to your dashboard which allows you to see all your stats on a single page. Less is more.

Finally, because all of the processing and collection runs on our servers and not yours, it doesn't cause any additional load on your hosting account. In fact, it's one of the fastest stats system, hosted or not hosted, that you can use.

Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not and lets you review the spam it catches under your blog's "Comments" admin screen.

Manage future events as an online calendar. Display upcoming events in a dynamic calendar, on a listings page, or as a list in the sidebar. You can subscribe to the calendar from iCal (OSX) or Sunbird.

Choose one WordPress category as the 'event' category, and then add posts for dates in the future. Add the calendar or event list functions to your template, or just use the 'Event Category' page to list your forthcoming events.

Thesis OpenHook takes the process of modifying Thesis and simplifies it!

Where once users would be required to open and modify their wp-content/themes/thesis/custom/custom_functions.php file, users can now easily customize Thesis via a new “Thesis OpenHook” panel in the Design area of your blog administration.

Not only can arbitrary HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and even PHP be inserted into any of Thesis' hooks, you can also easily remove any of the hooked default elements within Thesis with the click of a button!

What is reCAPTCHA?

reCAPTCHA is an anti-spam method originating from Carnegie Mellon University which uses CAPTCHAs in a genius way. Instead of randomly generating useless characters which users grow tired of continuosly typing in, risking the possibility that spammers will eventually write sophisticated spam bots which use OCR libraries to read the characters, reCAPTCHA uses a different approach.

While the world is in the process of digitizing books, sometimes certain words cannot be read. reCAPTCHA uses a combination of these words, further distorts them, and then constructs a CAPTCHA image. After a ceratin percentage of users solve the 'uknown' word the same way it is assumed that it is the correct spelling of the word. This helps digitize books, giving users a reason to solve reCAPTCHA forms. Because the industry level scanners and OCR software which are used to digitize the books can't read the words with which the CAPTCHAs are constructed, it is safe to assume that in-house spam-bot OCR techniques will not be able to bypass the CAPTCHA either.

reCAPTCHA has earned a very prestigious reputation among the various CAPTCHA systems available and is used by such sites as Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, and a few U.S. Government Websites such as the TV Converter Box Coupon Program Website.

This plugin uses the Yahoo API to suggest tags based on the post content. You have the option to automatically tags posts on save or get tag suggestions with a single click. Auto Tagger will not replace your existing tags.

WP Post Thumbnail plugin adds an image upload, crop and save panel in 'Write Post' screen. It allows you to easily upload a .jpg image file. Once the image file is uploaded, you can crop it before saving it as your thumbnail. That's it.

Spend less time messing around with Photoshop everytime you need to make a thumbnail (or two) for your post. Also, saves you time and trouble from manually copy-and-pasting uploaded image URLs into custom key value fields.

WP Post Thumbnail will scan your theme folders, look for your theme's 'wppt.xml' file and read your theme's thumbnail(s) configuration.

Why we need this WP Widget Cache?

WP Widget Cache can cache the output of your blog widgets. Usually it will significantly reduce the SQL queries to your database and speed up your site.

I think you’ve heard of WP-Cache or WP Super Cache, they are both top plugins for WordPress, which make your site much faster and responsive. Here is how cache works:

"caching WordPress pages and storing them in a static file for serving future requests directly from the file rather than loading and compiling the whole PHP code and the building the page from the database".

If your site get a very high traffic, or your blog are hosted on a shared server, or Google crawl your site frequently, you do need cache. If you use widgets, you do need WP Widget Cache.

Why WP-Cache or WP Super Cache is not enough?

WP-Cache or WP Super Cache cache ‘pages’, and WP Widget Cache cache ‘widgets’ or your sidebar, that’s the difference.

Let me explain this more clearly:

If some of your page is very popular, and people keep visit this page, then the page cache will be very helpful. But what if the user click some link and visit another page of your blog, or Google is crawling your site? Cache another whole page? Actually that’s not necessary for most time. As we all know, WordPress share the same widgets, they’re all the same, maybe on all the pages of your site. For example, the Categories widget, this maybe never change, the Archives widget, maybe changes once a month. So it’s really really not that necessary to query the database again， especially when you use a lot of widgets.

WP Widget Cache is not to replace the WP-Cache or WP Super Cache, it’s a plus for them, as it reducing the cost for caching a new page. you can set the cache time for each widget individually, seconds to years, whatever you like. For Categories widget, days maybe fine, for Recent Comments widget, seconds maybe fine.

How effective it is?

That depends on how many and what widgets you use, for http://www.mashget.com, the queries for home page reduce from from 69 to 19, that's means 70% improvement.

NOTE: In the next version (1.9) support for parameters will be discontinued. So you will no longer be able to use twitter_stream('username', '10') etc. It will be changing to traditional array or query string methods (to match WordPress. Please note when version 1.9 is released and you upgrade you will need to change this or Twitter Stream will not work. This is to allow development to continue. Sorry for any incovenience caused. Look here for more details.

Twitter Stream is a simple plugin designed to simply show a users Twitter timeline. It includes file caching to stop overuse of Twitter's API, and three different connection types (CURL, fopen, socket). You can also choose how many updates to return (maximum of 200). It also includes autolinking for URL's found within the timeline. Also includes a date ago feature, showing the time the tweet was posted in xx ago format. Also has a permalink pointing to the tweet.

A widget is included, but you must have WordPress version 2.8 or higher for it to work, however standard useage should work down to version 2.5 although it has not been tested.

Twitter Stream requires PHP5 due to the use of SimpleXML. If you do not have PHP5 installed you will not be able to use this plugin.

Twitter Stream is also designed to be very lightweight & use the smallest amount of resources possible, ideal for shared or low memory servers.

Here is a quick run down of the features available in Twitter Stream.

1. Show the twitter timeline for any public username.
2. Choose how many tweets to show.
3. A Widget or template function is available.
4. File caching to stop API overuse.
5. Optional date shown in xx ago format, also links to permalink for the tweet. (Requested by Ron)
6. Customizeable via CSS. (see 'Can I Style It?' in the FAQ)
7. Authentication for more accurate API counting & so protected users can show their tweets.
8. Translation files for different languages are now available to download on my blog post.
9. @replies now link to the user profile of the user you are replying to.
