Ferdinand Marcos

Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos (September 11, 1917 – September 28, 1989) was a Filipino lawyer and politician who served as President of the Philippines from 1965 to 1986. In the earlier part of his presidency, he was known for his leadership that saw high economic growth in the country. However in 1972, he placed the entire country under Martial Law due to rising fears of the Communist Insurgency. He ruled the Philippines for 21 years, making him the longest serving President of the Philippines. Public outrage led to the snap elections of 1986 and to the People Power Revolution in February 1986, which removed him from power.
Prior to the presidency, he served as a member of the Philippine House of Representatives from 1949 to 1959 and of the Philippine Senate from 1959 to 1965, where he was Senate President from 1963 to 1965.
His wife was Imelda Marcos whose excesses during their kleptocracy made her infamous in her own right, spawning the term "Imeldific".
